Dr. Michael I. Loizides

Chairman

Dr Michael I. Loizides is the Chairman of ISOTECH Ltd. Dr Loizides is a Chemical and Environmental Engineer. He is a graduate of the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He holds an MSc, DIC in Environmental Engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. He received his PhD from the National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering on the issue of co-composting of olive mills waste. Since 1990 he has worked as external associate of National Technical University of Athens and as Environmental Engineer in several projects. He has worked as scientific coordinator in more than 40 EU funded projects (LIFE, Leonardo da Vinci, 5th EU Framework for Research, 6th EU Framework for Research, MEDA and other), international funded projects (e.g. by UNEP, UNDP, USAID), transnational (eg DAC projects), national research projects (e.g. Cyprus Research Foundation) and private funded projects in the field of waste management, Environmental Impact Studies, ISO 14001, Safety Management and Community Annoyance.

He has been member of several European and international expert groups and networks as expert chemical and environmental engineer. He has cooperated with international organizations and worked as an expert researcher and consultant in more than 45 countries. He is the author/co-author of more than 30 published papers in Scientific Journals and International Conferences, of books and of more than 1000 published Technical Reports in the fields of waste management, compost and co-composting, CEMP (Construction Environmental Management Plans), decision support systems and community annoyance. He is an external Associate Professor at the University of Cyprus (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) and the Frederic University of Cyprus.

In 2014, Dr Loizides was appointed, by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, as the Head of the Technical Committee on Environment within the peacebuilding negotiations for Cyprus.  In 2015, he was appointed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, as Member of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. As a representative of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber, he is Member of the National Committee for the evaluation of Strategic Environmental Impact Assessments of the Republic of Cyprus. He represents Cyprus in several International and European Fora on environment and sustainability.

Dr M. Loizides’s vision for a sustainable future centres on innovation coupled with participatory education. His concept of Tiganokinisi, an innovative project implemented in 350 schools in Cyprus since 2014, that focuses on the education of youth on recycling, reuse and financial sustainability through the collection of used cooking oils at schools and its conversion into biofuel, was ranked in the top 61 best practices in ELSEVIER’s 2015 Green and Sustainable Chemistry International Contest (out of 495 eligible nominations).

Xenia I. Loizidou

 Director / Civil and Coastal Engineer

“Xenia I. Loizidou holds a Degree in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (Hydraulics Section, Harbour and Coastal Works Laboratory), an MSc, DIC in River, Estuary and Coastal Engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine of London, and a PhD in Participatory Decision-Support Systems from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1990 she has been working with issues relevant to Integrated Coastal Zone Management, coastal erosion control, coastal adaptation to climate changes, decision support systems, peace-building and blue growth.

She has been a member of several European and international expert groups and networks as executive coastal engineer and Integrated Coastal Zone Management expert and she has cooperated with international organizations and entities from more than 40 countries. She was executive coastal engineer at the Coastal Unit of Public Works Department in Cyprus (1992 – 1999) and since 1998 is the co-founder and Director of ISOTECH ltd Research and Consultancy (www.isotech.com.cy). She is also one of the founders of the NGO ‘AKTI Project and Research Centre’ (www.akti.org.cy), where, as a Member of the Board of Directors, she helps steer the organisation and guide its work in the areas of environment, education, peace keeping, social inclusion and awareness raising.

Xenia was the first female Chair of the Environmental Committee of the Cyprus Chamber of Engineers, a position which she held for 8 years (1997- 2002). She has been the Ambassador of Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Greece for the European Network of Coastal Research (2007-2011), she is an appointed Member of the Board of Directors of the Oceanographic Institute and she is a Member of the European Jury of the QualityCoast Award. The President of the Republic of Cyprus appointed Xenia as the Greek Cypriot Chairwoman of the Technical Committee on Gender Equality within the peace-building negotiations in Cyprus and as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (2014-2018). In September 2019, Xenia was awarded the title of ‘Ambassador of the Mediterranean Coasts 2019‘ by the United Nations Environment Programme’s PAP/RAC. She is the first Cypriot to become a Member of the UN’s International Expert Compliance Committee for the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols (2020-present). Since 2019, she has been a Member of the UN SDSN Cyprus Leadership Council (the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network).

In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious “Iconic Women in Business Contributing to a Better World” award by the All Ladies League during the Women Economic Forum 2016, New Delhi, India, and she also received the “Stelios Bi-Communal Award” by the Stelios Foundation for her work on using marine litter as a peacebuilding tool in Cyprus. In honor of the International Women’s Day 2014, she was named by the European Parliament’s Office in Cyprus as one of the ten Cypriot Women who are: “active, dedicated and tireless. An inspiration to all of us”. She is the first Cypriot woman to become a member of the Women in Leadership Europe Network (WIL).

Xenia is the author/ co-author of more than 40 published papers in Scientific Journals and International Conferences, of books (e.g. IPCC publication) and of more than 100 published Technical Reports. She has a strong presence in Cypriot Mass Media and newspapers. She is married to Panagiotis Thanassas, and she is the mother of their two daughters: Leda and Maria.”

Kyriaki Demetriou

Head of Projects and Programmes Management

Kyriaki Demetriou is the Head of the Projects and Programmes Management Department of ISOTECH Ltd Research and Consultancy. She has graduated the Department of Turkish Studies of the University of Cyprus and she has a Master Degree in Contemporary European Studies from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. After finishing her studies in 1998 she had a 5-months in-service training with the European Commission, at DG Environment in the Department of Environmental Cooperation with European Third Countries. Since 1999 Ms Demetriou is working with ISOTECH Ltd as Programmes and Projects Coordinator. Until now she has been involved as coordinator in several national, transnational and European Union funded Projects (e.g.LIFE, Leonardo Da Vinci, MEDA, Youth for Europe etc) and research programs (5FP, Cyprus Research Foundation etc).

Demetra Orthodoxou

Biochemist / Environmental Engineer

“Demetra Orthodoxou is a Biochemist and Environmental Engineer and leads ISOTECH Ltd’s Applied Environmental Research Department. Her work focuses on marine and terrestrial plastic pollution, waste management, and the open-environment biodegradation of novel materials, with a strong emphasis on applied research and real-world environmental challenges.

She leads ISOTECH’s involvement in research and innovation projects, coordinating scientific activities, stakeholder engagement, and participatory decision-making processes. Her expertise also includes policy analysis and the development of evidence-based policy recommendations, bridging scientific research with environmental governance and sustainable policy development”

Demetra Petsa

Applied Phisicist /Environmental Engineer

“Demetra Petsa is a graduate of the National Technical University of Athens (BSc in Applied Physics, School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences) and the University of Cyprus (MSc in Environmental Engineering). Her academic background provided her with a strong foundation in urban physics, with particular emphasis on the built environment and energy efficiency.

At ISOTECH, she has significant experience in Environmental Impact Assessments, community annoyance and noise assessments, and a wide range of environmental studies, including circular economy projects and waste management studies. She has extensive experience in research and innovation projects at both national and European levels, contributing to strategic project development, technical coordination, implementation oversight, and reporting. Demetra is also closely involved in stakeholder engagement, policy development, and decision-support processes.”

Christina Fessa

Chemical Engineer

Christina has been engaged in environmental consultancy, by being part of over 30 Strategic Environmental Assessments, Feasibility and Environmental Impact Assessment studies. She holds accreditation as an Environmental and ISO 14001 Consultant and Lead Auditor, Lead Auditor for ISO 9001 and ISO 22000. She is member of the National Delegation for the CEN/TC 473 Circular Economy Committee, Head of the national technical committee CYS/TC 26 “Circular Plastic Products” and of the CYS/TC 27 Climate neutrality.

Currently, Christina is a part of the environmental consultant team at several industries in Cyprus, in the fields of shipping, plastics and food. In these roles, she oversees the implementation of ISO 14064 and the calculation and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, for which she was trained by the Cyprus Company of Certification. Between 2020 and 2021, she was part of the team that developed the Circular Economy Strategy for Cyprus, a project funded by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry.

In addition to her current commitments, Christina is actively engaged in various ongoing Horizon Projects and has contributed to 10 internationally and nationally funded projects on Environment and Sustainability. 

Maria-Christina Constantinou

Chemical Engineer

“Maria-Christina holds a Diploma and Integrated Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering (National Technical University of Athens) and a master’s degree in Chemical Process Engineering: Advance Chemical Engineering (University College London-UCL). Her studies equipped her with strong background on plastics and polymer related topics.

She is involved in ongoing Horizon projects addressing bioplastics and biodegradable polymers in packaging applications, while contributing to exploitation and intellectual property strategies that support the real-world uptake of research outcomes. Her role also includes stakeholder engagement activities aimed at strengthening collaboration between public authorities, industry stakeholders, and local communities.”

Ourania Papakyriakou

Chemical Engineer

Ourania is engaged in the development of composting schemes, with a focus on applied research, the design of compost systems, and the preparation of feasibility studies. Currently, she participates in several European-funded projects related to composting and organic waste management.

In parallel, she is involved in community annoyance consulting services, reviewing Environmental Impact Assessments for proposed facilities and carrying out technical evaluations of potential environmental risks based on plant processes and operational characteristics.
 
At a consulting level, she is involved in environmental consulting for industries in Cyprus, focusing on the reduction of CO₂ emissions and water consumption.

Zinovia Kourtellari

Project Engineer

“Zinovia is a Project Engineer at Isotech, holding a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. She works on the development and process design of composting schemes and organic waste management solutions, focusing on applied technical analysis and feasibility-level assessments.
Her work builds on prior experience in waste processing technologies and techno-economic evaluation, supporting the assessment of sustainable and implementable waste management systems.
She is also actively involved in stakeholder engagement activities, including the organisation and facilitation of workshops that support collaboration between public authorities, industry stakeholders, and local communities.”

Elisavet Felekidou

Communications Manager

Elisavet is the Communication Manager at Isotech, where she is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies, managing media relations, producing and curating content, coordinating outreach activities and events, and overseeing internal and external communications. She holds a BA in History and Archaeology (specialization in Archaeology) and an MA in Museology -Cultural Studies. Her academic and professional background in applied and digital museology, exhibition design, and museum education has shaped her approach to science communication, with a strong focus on public engagement, sustainability, and the social relevance of scientific research.

Evi Stavrou

Project Communications Manager

Evi Stavrou is a Project Communications Manager at ISOTECH Ltd, specialising in dissemination, stakeholder engagement and science communication for EU-funded environmental and innovation projects. She holds a Master’s degree in New Technologies for Communication and Learning and has more than seven years of experience in marketing, content strategy and event coordination. Her work focuses on designing and implementing effective communication strategies that promote visibility and impact across Horizon Europe and other international initiatives. Evi combines strategic planning with creative execution, producing clear, engaging content that connects research results with people, communities and policy.

Antigoni Lyra

Office Administrator

Antigoni is responsible for administration, financial coordination, and event planning. She ensures smooth internal processes, manages payments, and supports the successful organisation of company events.
